Doors will open at 6:30.\n<p><strong>What to bring:<\/strong>\u00a0Your instrument, a music stand, and your music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attire:<\/strong>\u00a0Dress code is casual\/comfortable. Please refrain from wearing scented products such as perfume or hair spray.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parking: <\/strong>Parking is difficult in this residential neighborhood. We highly recommend public transit: the 1-California and the 24-Divisadero lines both stop just a block away at California and Divisadero. We will collect this music at the conclusion of the workshop.<\/em><\/p>\n\t<h2>Meet the Mentors<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\">John Engelkes<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/amateurmusic.org\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-E-crop-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>John Engelkes<\/strong>\u00a0joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1981. A native of Iowa, he was previously a member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Florida Symphony. He studied with John Hansen at the University of Northern Iowa, where he received his bachelor\u2019s degree, and later pursued a master&#8217;s degree at Northwestern University. At Northwestern, he studied with Frank Crisafulli and Edward Kleinhammer of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While in Chicago, Mr. Engelkes performed with the Chicago Symphony, Northwestern Wind Ensemble, Northwestern Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Chicago Pops. Mr. Engelkes has appeared at the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto in 2011, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Sun Valley Music Festival. A founding member of the Bay Brass, he also serves on the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Aspen Music Festival, and in 2014 was a guest artist and faculty member of the International Trombone Festival.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">Nick Platoff<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/amateurmusic.org\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nick-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Nick Platoff <\/strong>joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2016 as Associate Principal Trombone.<\/p>\n<p>He also enjoys a multi-faceted career as a chamber musician, vocalist, improviser, conductor, composer\/arranger, concert producer, and recording artist. He performs and creates in non-classical genres ranging from funk and hip-hop to jazz and music for multi-tracked trombone. Outside the concert hall, Nick has performed in such disparate locales as Black Rock City\u2019s deep playa, Moroccan dance clubs, Miami yoga classes, Alpine peaks, the Museum of Non-Conformist Art in St. Petersburg, and San Francisco&#8217;s street corners, train stations, and homeless shelters.<\/p>\n<p>Platoff teaches in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College division and also works as the Low Brass section coach for the award-winning SFS Youth Orchestra. He has taught as guest faculty at the Juilliard School, National Orchestral Institute, and the Miami Music Festival.
