It is more an attitude, a unique expressive commitment, and a joy.\u00a0\u00a0I am very much looking forward to being with all of you in our four sessions together, as we explore the fascinating history and meaningful practice of Baroque style!\n<p>&#8211; Elizabeth Blumenstock<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tSeries Overview from Elizabeth\n\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><b>Session I &#8211; October 6 &#8211; Expression in Baroque string playing<\/b><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t<p>(Participants may wish to take notes, and please have your intruments handy, tuned to A415, for at least the first three sessions)<\/p>\n<p>We will talk about the different means of expression used by string players in modern and baroque style, the role of vibrato and dynamic use of the bow, the respective properties of modern and Baroque bows, and will discuss ways of using modern setup to achieve a more baroque sound. \u00a0I will play some demos in both styles, and we will actually practice some fundamental baroque bow exercises during this class.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><b>Session II &#8211; October 13 &#8211; Rhetorical music: What is it, and why does it matter?  Is it fun?  Yes!<\/b><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\tI will give a brief history of the rhetorical style, emphasizing both rhetoric as embedded in music by the composer, and as a part of the performer&#8217;s attitude and delivery. \u00a0I will play examples of both aspects of rhetoric. \u00a0We will review the fundamental bow exercises towards the end of the class.\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><b>Session III &#8211; October 20 &#8211; What does the music mean? Festival performances include the Boston and Berkeley Early Music Festivals, the Carmel Bach Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi festival in Finland, and the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, among many others.
