About the Event

Date and Time

Two Saturdays | July 10 & 17, 2021 | 2 p.m. Pacific

Session One: the Musician as Athlete

Playing and rehearsing can be physically demanding!  Learn to stay in shape regardless of how much or how little you are playing. Amos will give you strategies for strength and flexibilty, incorporating Alexander Technique and posture awareness.

Session Two: a Musical Triathlon

Playing in large ensembles and small ones can make different demands on the body. Amos will discuss his life as orchestra player, chamber musician, and teacher.  He’ll describe the attributes and skills necessary for each path, how each discipline differs, and how each informs the others.

Who should attend?

All musicians welcome, especially instrumentalists.

How should I prepare?

We may post some selections for review, but you don’t need to study up: just come prepared for a journey of discovery with Amos.

Please have a mirror handy so you can see yourself playing during the workshop.

Is there a cost?

Tickets are $25 per session, $40 for both sessions.

About the Mentor

Amos Yang is the Assistant Principal Cellist of the San Francisco Symphony. He is also Principal Cellist of the Sun Valley Music Festival and played with the Seattle Symphony from 2002-2007. Prior to that, Yang cultivated a chamber music career with the Maia String Quartet which held residencies at The Peabody Conservatory and at the University of Iowa, while also working with the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Midori Foundation and Aspen Festival. Much of this work included presentations in schools for under represented students in inner cities and musical ambassador work abroad.

Yang now serves on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Tianjin Juilliard, and the San Francisco Academy. He is an active chamber musician and enjoys community outreach through teaching and concerts. He holds BM and MM degrees from the Juilliard School as well as the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music.

An avid cyclist, Amos was most recently focused on training for the “Death Ride” – a one day, 130 mile, 15,000 foot elevation gain, high-altitude event – that was unfortunately cancelled last year because of the pandemic.
