About the Event

From the very first bars of Op. 76, No. 4, Joseph Haydn draws us into a world of natural beauty. This quartet, known as “Sunrise” for this evocative opening moment, is one of the last quartets from the composer who is often credited with establishing the string quartet in its modern form. Join the New Esterházy Quartet to explore the work in depth in this 5-hour intensive workshop that will draw on their signature affiliation with Haydn’s phenomenal output for string quartet. You’ll discover how period-instrument performance has brought illuminating new sensibilities to this amazing ensemble music we love.

About the Mentors

The members of New Esterházy Quartet are internationally-known period-instrument and chamber music specialists Kati Kyme and Lisa Weiss, violins; violist Anthony Martin; and cellist William Skeen. As individuals, the players have performed and recorded in the top echelon of early music ensembles worldwide. In addition to many years of musical collaboration in Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Cantata Collective, and a long list of renowned chamber ensembles, these four Bay Area musicians have enjoyed decades of friendship and shared experience. Their history as both colleagues and friends endows the quartet with an unusual commonality of musical language and gesture, and provides a strong foundation for a unique and original ensemble voice. In addition to concert appearances, NEQ enjoys performing in private homes and other intimate settings where the traditional experience of true chamber music is renewed and shared by players and listeners together.        Photo by Barbara Butkus

PLEASE NOTE: as violinist Lisa Weiss had already been engaged elsewhere, we will be joined by guest violinist Noah Strick for the workshop. Noah is a long-time colleague of the New Esterházy Quartet musicians and is a member of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.
